Workplace personality conflicts drain your energy and cloud your attitude.  Every workplace has conflict.  How you deal with them is the key to saving your sanity.

Which Style Pushes Your Buttons?

Is it the:

  • Dominant Style that has a preference to be in charge and can be bossy?
  • Influencing Style that is super optimistic about everything and can’t seem to get their paperwork in on time?
  • Steadiness Style who likes to know their place in the plan and can resist change?
  • Conscientious Style who has a need for perfection and takes a long time to make a decision?

I was leading a team building and one of the Influencing Styles was fretting when no one responded to hear and did not give feedback.  I witnessed her frustration and her hurt feelings.

She said, “I like to focus on the people and make sure everyone is happy.  Creating a happy work environment is the most important thing to me.”

One of her co-workers said, “No, no not me.  I want everything to be perfect and accurate.” She was a Conscientious Style.

To which a Dominant Style replied, “My co-worker drives me crazy because I cannot hold her accountable to getting her paperwork done in a timely manner.”

The DISC Program

The DISC Program outlines four main personality styles in the workplace.

Characteristics: This person says `charge’ and comes right at you.

Style: Direct, fast paced, self-contained, and focused on the task.

Theme: “Notice my accomplishments.”


Characteristics: Easily identified by their big smile and friendly greeting.

Style:  Direct, fast paced, open, and focused on the relationship.

Theme: “Notice Me.”


Characteristics: Create goodwill and maintain a pleasant atmosphere.

Style:   Indirect, slow-paced, open, and focused on the relationship.

Theme:  “We’re all in this together. Let’s work as a team.”


Characteristics: There’s only one way to do it and that’s the “High C” way.

Style:  Indirect, slow-paced, self-contained, and focused on the task.

Theme: “Notice My Efficiency.”

According to a national survey, managers’ report that they waste seven weeks of work time each year resolving staff conflicts. Imagine creating a peaceful and harmonious workplace with time to spare.
